An Evening with Satluj

I have a strange liking for rivers and waterways; I don’t know what this entails, but I intuit this has something to do with my love for the spatial sense of being.

A river attracts me as it embodies space and time in a single entity. A river is a spatial place that has a unique geographical location. A river may shift somewhat, but it cannot betray its roots. It spends its whole life between two banks. This rootedness of a river makes it so close to us. We live freely in our boundedness, between two banks of birth and death.

River Satluj is a geographic legacy of the time when it watered the middle earth of the Indian Sub-continent. As history suggests, Satluj used to be a mighty river and it had flourishing life and human civilization around.

Yesterday we spent an evening with Satluj with Sajid Ramzan. Our host at that place was Mr. Bakht Ali, who is a lover of nature, too.

The river is a supportive system. It has its own aesthetic. And when a nature-lover yearns for peace of mind and drags his stressed-and-polluted-riddle soul towards the river, he meets beauties on the way. Life around the banks of the river has its own shade of beauty and lush. And I saw exquisite freshness on the way to Pattan of River Satluj, aka river bank. I took these aesthetic treats as welcome beauties of the river.

River stands for calmness and flow. While standing at the bank of Satluj, I realized that how the river teaches us the lessons of life: keep flowing and keep it calm. We have tried to capture that calmness and steady flow.

The Spirit of River is of Flow and Calmness- and It emerges so true for River Satluj

The river gives us pleasure to perceive the sun-set differently

And when you capture the thirsty souls approaching River…

The river is generous but it is indifferent too. We embrace her beauty and enjoy her company. But it keeps flowing without noticing our company. It never shares with us how it feels our presence there on its banks. I found one particular Pattan of the River Satluj soo soothing to sit and meditate. It invigorated my soul and there was an excellent spectacle too: the Satluj was flowing calmly and the sun was touching the western edges of the horizon. A redness was spreading around. And look! the river turned into a reflecting mirror telling us how the shades of the day were replaced with shades of night.

  1. Ghulam Mustafa says:

Wao a calm of nature that feeds our empty soul, a soul that is surrounded by city noise, busy in daily routine life and following its daily pattern. You have made your day memorable and i am sure you would have felt a lot of mental peace at rive bank (as obvious in snapshots). It is necessary for us to spare some time like this and enjoy the calmness of nature.
